From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone) is a piece of attractive mineral, which—when cut and polished—is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks, (such as lapis-lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone. From Wikipedia under the

I have a ring with a red stone that I want to change to blue. Is it possible to take the ring into a jeweler's and change the gemstone for another? If so, where can I get this done, and how much might it cost? Asked by Rachael - Tue May 12 20:00:14 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. What kind of new blue stone do you want? If you want a blue diamond, it's going to be quite expensive ;-), if you want a dark sapphire or a blue topaz it's not going to be expensive, if you want a blue crystal it's going to be even less expensive. You see - not enough information for us to answer your question. I would only go out and buy the stone myself if you have means to accurately measure the diameter of the stone needed. I would go to a jeweler first and see what they think. Answered by loves_jewels - Thu May 14 03:52:58 2009 What gemstone is an element on the periodic table?
