A. Water is used in most mining projects. The waste water is an effluent of that mining. Arsenic is found in the natural environment in some abundance in the Earth s crust and in small quantities in rock, soil, water and air. It is present in many different minerals. Mine effluents frequently have elevated concentrations of arsenic. This occupies the pore spaces in the soil thereby contaminating the soil. If the effluent travels further down to below the water table, then the ground water also becomes contaminated.
